Telescope views death of galaxy

New stars and planets may be forming within the old galaxies (Image: Gemini Observatory)
Two galaxies collide in the constellation of Pisces, some 100 million light-years away from Earth.
Astronomers say it gives a scary insight into what may happen to our own planet some 5 billion years from now.
The Milky Way is expected to merge with the neighbouring Andromeda Galaxy, swallowing up the Solar System.
The image was captured last month by an instrument on the Gemini North Telescope at Mauna Kea, Hawaii.
Professor Ian Robson, Director of the UK Astronomy Technology Centre, which built the instrument, said that when he first saw the image, it sent shivers down his spine.
"Our saving grace is that we have about 5 billion years left before we get swallowed up by Andromeda," he said.
"Nevertheless, it's amazing to see so far in advance how planet Earth and our own galaxy will ultimately end. Glad to say I won't be around when the fireball happens."
The combined galaxies, known as NGC 520, have lost their shape as a result of the collision. Astronomers believe new stars are forming in the faint red glowing areas seen above and beneath the middle of the image.
It is one of many snapshots of distant galaxies and star forming regions taken by the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) since it was installed in 2001.

An Irish friendship wish

May your purse always hold a coin or two;

Mindfulness

The greatest support we can have is mindfulness, which means being totally present in each moment. If the mind remains centered, it cannot make up stories about the injustice of the world or one's friends, or about one's desires or sorrows. All these stories could fill many volumes, but when we are mindful such verbalizations stop. Being mindful means being fully absorbed in the moment, leaving no room for anything else. We are filled with the momentary happening, whatever it is--standing or sitting or lying down, feeling pleasure or pain--and we maintain a nonjudgmental awareness, a "just knowing."

STAY STRESSED - THE BEST WAY TO.......

Are you worried now about how to stay stressed? You'll have no trouble if you practice the following clinically proven methods:

NEVER EXERCISE. Exercise wastes a lot of time that could be spent worrying.

EAT ANYTHING YOU WANT. Hey, if cigarette smoke can't cleanse your system, a balanced diet isn't likely to.

GAIN WEIGHT. Work hard at staying at least 25 pounds over your recommended weight.

TAKE PLENTY OF STIMULANTS. The old standards of caffeine, nicotine, sugar, and cola will continue to do the job just fine.

GET RID OF YOUR SOCIAL SUPPORT SYSTEM. Let the few friends who are willing to tolerate you know that concern yourself with friendships only if you have time, and you never have time. If a few people persist in trying to be your friend, avoid them.

PERSONALIZE ALL CRITICISM. Anyone who criticizes any aspect of your work, family, dog, house, or car is mounting a personal attack. Don't take time to listen, be offended, then return the attack!

MALES AND FEMALES ALIKE - BE MACHO. Never ever ask for help, and if you want it done right, do it yourself!

BECOME A WORKAHOLIC. Put work before everything else, and be sure to take work home evenings and weekends. Keep reminding yourself that vacations are for sissies.

DISCARD GOOD TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS. Schedule in more activities every day than you can possibly get done and then worry about it all whenever you get a chance.

PROCRASTINATE. Putting things off to the last second always produces a marvelous amount of stress.

WORRY ABOUT THINGS YOU CAN'T CONTROL. Worry about the stock market, earthquakes, the approaching Ice Age, you know, all the big issues.

BECOME NOT ONLY A PERFECTIONIST BUT SET IMPOSSIBLY HIGH STANDARDS......and either beat yourself up, or feel guilty, depressed, discouraged, and/or inadequate when you don't meet them.

THROW OUT YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR. Staying stressed is no laughing matter, and it shouldn't be treated as one.

GETTING ANGRY IS LIKE VINEGAR WHICH WILL NOT ATTRACT THE bees

Anger. A fit of anger with a travel provider will get you nowhere fast. (Throwing a phone at a hotel clerk might end you up in jail.) Getting angry at poor service or a delayed flight will not correct the problem. For me, I often find myself tempted to get angry at inept service people but by turning the other cheek. I don’t look like the bad person, and besides, you attract more bees with honey than vinegar.

Forget the past

THOUGHTS

Trivial thoughts, insignificant thoughts,
When followed they distract the mind.
Not understanding those thoughts
The roaming mind runs back and forth.
But by understanding those thoughts
One ardent and mindful restrains the mind.
An awakened one has overcome them completely
So they do not arise to distract the mind.

TWENTY ONE GEMS

SUBJECT: twenty-one gems - iF YOU LIKE YOUR FRIENDS, SEND IT TO THEM TOO

This is without a doubt one of the nicest good luck forwards I have received

Hope it works for you - and me!

Lotus Touts: You have 6 minutes

There's some mighty fine advice in these words, even if you're not superstitious. This Lotus Touts has been sent To you for good luck from the Anthony Robbins organization. It has been sent around the world ten times so Far.

Do not keep this message.

The Lotus Touts must leave your hands in 6 MINUTES. Otherwise you will get a very unpleasant surprise. This is true, even if you are not superstitious, agnostic, or otherwise faith impaired.

ONE. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

TWO. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.

THREE. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want

FOUR. When you say, "I love you," mean it.

FIVE. When you say, "I'm sorry," look the person in the eye.

SIX. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

SEVEN. Believe in love at first sight.

EIGHT. Never laugh at anyone's dreams. People who don't have dreams don't have much.

NINE. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way
to live life completely.

TEN.. In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.

ELEVEN. Don't judge people by their relatives.

TWELVE. Talk slowly but think quickly.

THIRTEEN. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, "Why do you want to know?"

FOURTEEN. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

FIFTEEN. Say "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.

SIXTEEN. When you lose, don't lose the lesson

SEVENTEEN. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and responsibility for all your actions.

EIGHTEEN. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

NINETEEN. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

TWENTY. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.

TWENTY-ONE. Spend some time alone.

everything you ever dreamed of will begin to take shape.

A true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart.

If you like your friends, send it to them too; it will bring you good luck.

NEVER RETALIATE IN KIND

The Buddha was invited by a Brahman to have a meal in his house. But when he arrived, the Brahman greeted him strangely, with a torrent of abuse.

Politely, the Buddha asked, “Do visitors come to your home, good Brahman?”
“Yes.”
“What preparations do you make for them?”
“We get ready a great feast.”
”What happens if they don’t arrive?”
“Then we gladly eat it ourselves.”

“Well, Brahman, you’ve invited me for a meal and you’ve entertained me with hard words. I want nothing from your preparation. So please take it back and eat it yourselves.”

“Never retaliate in kind,” the Buddha told his followers. “Hatred does not come to an end through hatred but can only cease through generosity.”

Chain letters

I want to thank all of you who have taken the time and trouble to send me your chain letters over the past two years.

Thank you for making me feel safe, secure, blessed, and wealthy. Because of your concern.......

A separate individual?

All those of compassion should encourage their minds to think: "Every living being, whether born from the womb or born in any other way, whether they have perception or none, we should bring toward the boundless freedom of liberation. And when this vast and immeasurable number of beings has been liberated, we must not believe that any being has been liberated!" Why is this? It is because no compassionate person who is truly compassionate holds to the idea of a self, a being, or a separate individual.

Chhama and God's Laws

22. Forgiveness (kshama) in the man of God consists in not inflicting, wishing to inflict, punishment on those who harm or wrong him. He knows that the cosmic law will see to it that all injustices are rectified; it is unnecessary and presumptuous to attempt to hasten its workings or to determine their form. Retribution at the hands of the immutable law of karma has for its proper and far-seeing purpose the eventual spiritual redemption of the sinner.

RESPECTIABILITY OF MEDITATION

"The nice thing about meditation is that it makes doing nothing quite respectable."
— Paul Dean

DO YOU KNOW YOUR VALUE or WORTH?

Values

A well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20.00 bill.In
the room of 200, he asked, Who would like this $20 bill? Hands started going
up. He said, I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do
this. He proceeded to crumple the $20 dollar bill up. He then asked, Who
still wants it? Still the hands were up in the air.

Well, he replied, What if I do this? And he dropped it on the ground and
started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now
crumpled and dirty. Now who still wants it? Still the hands went into the
air.

My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did
to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It
was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and
ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that
come our way. We feel as though we are worthless.

But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose
your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still
priceless to those who love you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we
do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE. You are special - Don't EVER forget
it. If you do not pass this on, you may never know the lives it touches, the
hurting hearts it speaks to, or the hope that it can bring. Count your
blessings, not your problems. Never be afraid to try something new.

And remember.....
Amateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic.

What a coincidence?

Three key ‘culprits’ absconding; Solapur police clueless, say warrants will be issued soon

SOLAPUR, AUGUST 11: Bijapur Road and Kotgi Road are two prominent residential localities which are hubs of Solapur’s rich and famous. Manoj Nimbalkar, a clerk in the revenue department and the main accused in the Rs 9.1-crore Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) fraud, and Subhash Durape, an agriculture department supervisor and co-accused, stay there.

Nimbalkar, Durape and another accused, Sutvirayya Swami, an agriculture department assistant — all have been suspended — are absconding since July 12, a day after Collector Manisha Varma found incriminating evidence against them. While family members say they have no idea of their whereabouts, Solapur Police too is clueless.

Nimbalkar has a two-storeyed plush bungalow on Bijapur Road. As a clerk, he draws a salary of Rs 5,000-Rs 6,000 a month and his wife says they used to stay in a one-room flat just seven years ago. She quickly adds that she is a primary school teacher — ‘‘and the double income helped us buy this bungalow. We have also taken a loan for it.’’

She insists she has no idea where her husband is but gives us his mobile number which is, of course, switched off.

Durape’s bungalow on Kotgi Road area is fancier. His monthly earning as an agricultural supervisor is around Rs 8,000. The upper storey of the two-storeyed bungalow has been rented out to two local dailies. The ground floor is well-furnished. ‘‘He is not here since the past seven days and he has changed his mobile, so I can’t get in touch with him,’’ his wife says.

Another accused, Swami, who earns less than Rs 5,000 a month, lives at Bhavani Peth in a modest housing society. His father tells us he is in Parbhani.

The indifference of the Solapur Police to these cases — four criminal cases have been lodged against them — has raised many eyebrows. Pune’s Divisional Commissioner, Prabhakar Karandikar, is obviously upset. ‘‘Now that criminal charges have been framed against them, it is for the police to nab them.’’

But Karandikar isn’t surprised. ‘‘I suspected that the police were under instructions to resist a deeper probe, because when we wanted to file the first FIR, the police made such a fuss that it took them an entire night, from 11 p m to 5 a m, to lodge the complaint.’’

Collector Varma, who claims the fraud is just the tip of the iceberg, says there should have been arrests by now.

Solapur Police Commissioner Jagan Nath responds on predictable lines: ‘‘The law does not spare anyone. A special squad has been created and it has conducted raids on the houses of the accused without any positive results. Soon, we will declare them absconders and attach their properties but all this takes time.’’

NEW DELHI: Indian American Vinod Gupta, who has funded a string of educational institutes in India, is investing $2-2.5 million on setting up the country's first school on intellectual property rights (IPR).

The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Law will be set up at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, from where Gupta graduated in 1967. The human resource development ministry has given its go-ahead.

"The institute will provide world-class legal education in the intellectual property space, leading to post-graduate degrees in law and later doctorate programs," Gupta, who is probably the only American Indian to stay overnight in the White House as a personal guest of former American president Bill Clinton, said.

With an annual intake of 150, the institute is expected to attract students from both within the country and abroad, Gupta added. Admissions will begin next July.

"(The institute) will probably cost $2-$2.5 million initially, spread over two years. We expect the institute to be self-sustaining in two years," said Gupta, who chairs infoUSA, Inc., a $300 million company that deals with information databases for businesses and employs over 2,000 people across the U.S.

"It's a rather calamity of India today that there are no thinkers. A big country, a powerful country of a billion people. There are no thinkers in India. What is important today is the economic development of India and China that will completely alter the world," Naipaul told The New York Times in an interview.

In contrast "nothing that is happening in the Arab world has that capacity", Naipaul said, adding, "It has capacity for mischief. They are spreading their little wars to Indonesia, the Philippines and all these other places. But that's just mischief. What's happening in India and China will bend the world and will change it forever."

Naipaul, whose writings about the world of Islam and its troubles have been considered prophetic, had a sobering view of the September 11 terror attack on America. "What happened on September 11 was too astonishing. It is one of a kind, can't happen again. But in the end it has had no effect on the world. It has just been a spectacle like a bank raid in a western film. They will be caught by the sheriff eventually but they'd raid a few banks," he said.

On the Arab world he said "intellectually it is a great tyranny. Because it is a tyranny people's can't grow intellectually and be on the level of the world they envy. But it has always been like that. Religion has always been a tyranny and it becomes an expression of state power."

He spoke of his controversial views on Islam with undiminished vehemence. "I became very interested in the Islamic question, and thought I would try to understand it from the roots, ask very simple questions and somehow make a narrative of that discovery," he said.

He wondered to what extent "people who lock themselves away in belief...shut themselves away from the active busy world?" He said he was also interested in "to what extent without knowing it" they were "parasitic on that world"? He said there were "no thinkers to point out to them where their thoughts and their passion had led them"?

He reiterated his famous observation that as a form of writing the novel is dead. "What I felt was, if you spend your life just writing fiction, you are going to falsify your material," he said. "And the fictional form was going to force you to do things with the material, to dramatise it in a certain way. I thought non-fiction gave one a chance to explore the world, the other world, the world that one didn't know fully."

"I thought if I didn't have this resource of non-fiction I would have dried up perhaps. I'd have come to the end of my material, and would have done what a writer like Graham Greene did. You know, he took the Graham Greene figure to the Congo, took him to Argentina, took him to Haiti, for no rhyme or reason."

A Big Advantage For Curvy Women

Curvaceous, voluptuous women are more likely to live longer than their slimmer friends. For good looks and good health, the feminine ideal really should be an hourglass figure with well-defined hips. Think Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sophia Loren.

Belly or butt: Which is better? The shape of your body, not how much you weigh, is the most powerful predictor of your health.

It turns out that those wide hips help protect women against potentially fatal heart conditions, according to researchers from the Institute of Preventative Medicine in Copenhagen. Why? Hip fat appears to contain a beneficial natural anti-inflammatory protein hormone called adiponectin that actually prevents arteries from swelling up and becoming blocked, report the BBC News and the Manchester Evening News.
Here's the magic number: Your hips need to measure 40 inches with a dress size of 14 for the most benefit.

Overweight? Here's good news! There's actually an advantage to being just a few pounds over your ideal weight. Click to find out what it is.

The study: Almost 3,000 men and women aged 35 to 65 took part in the research. In 1987 and 1988 the Danish researchers measured the participants' height, weight and body mass index. Through 1998, Danish health registers were checked to find out which of the participants suffered cardiovascular problems, while death records were checked through 2001.

Do popular people live longer? Find out the weird effect of the "status syndrome" on your health and happiness.

The results: Compared to the group of women with the smallest hip circumferences, women with the biggest were found to have an 87 percent reduction in deaths, reports the BBC News. The curvier women also had an 86 percent reduced risk of developing coronary heart disease and a 46 percent reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease. Sorry, guys. This benefit is for ladies only. Large hip circumference was not found to offer better heart health for men. "It seems that the protection is not a matter of wide hips, it's the detrimental effect of narrow hips with a lack of muscle fat, or bone or a combination of both," study leader Berit Heitmann told the BBC. "Fat on hips is different than fat on the abdomen. If you do not have enough of this fat, you may risk heart attacks."

Call it a Rx for aging beautifully! If you eat these foods, you'll look 10 years younger. Find out Dr. Nicolas Perricone's secrets to an age-defying diet.

The classic apple shape where the fat is located in the belly area really can be dangerous to your health since fat cells produce chemicals that can change the insulin system. That in turn raises the risk of diabetes and heart disease. The study results were published in the journal Obesity Research.

Do this when you're young, and you're more likely to live until you're 90! Click to find out what it is.

UNKNOWN SOLDIER'S PRAYER

The Blessing of Unanswered Prayers

I asked for strength that I might achieve;
I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health that I might do greater things;
I was given infirmity that I might do better things.
I asked for riches that I might be happy;
I was given poverty that I might be wise.
I asked for power that I might have the praise of men;
I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things that I might enjoy life;
I was given life that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I had asked for,
but eveything that I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself my unspoken prayers were answered;
I am, among all men, most richly blessed.

DO NOT COMPARE YOUR ACTIONS......

It is very important that you do not compare your actions to your partner's or judge your partner's behavior as unskillful. Rather, focus on your own actions and take responsibility for them. Recall those times when you looked into your partner's eyes and saw the pain you caused this person you love to suffer. If you can admit your own faults, if you can see how hurtful your actions were and tap into a sense of concern for your partner's well-being, then compassion and loving-friendliness will flow.

THE REAL BUDDHA

A gold Buddha can't get through a furnace, a wood Buddha can't get through a fire, and a clay Buddha can't get through water. The real Buddha sits within: enlightenment, nirvana, suchness, and Buddha-nature are all clothes sticking to the body.

TAJ MAHAL - JUST ENJOY ITS BEAUTY, DON'T TRY TO GRASP OR OWN IT

All the delightful things of the world--sweet sounds, lovely forms, all the pleasant tastes and touches and thoughts--these are all agreed to bring happiness if they are not grasped and possessed.

But if you regard them merely as pleasures for your own use and satisfaction and do not see them as passing wonders, they will bring suffering.

LIFTED UP

'you remember the times your father carried you, when you walked with him on the hills."

"Yes mother," I said.

"You were scared to jump from one rock to another, and dad used to just stoop down, pick you up and step over."

"It wasn't just the mountains ma," I said, "It was also at the railway station."

I was afraid to go over the footbridge, because the wooden planks which made up the bridge floor had cracks through which I could see the engines below. Evil monsters that breathed fire and blew smoke up through the crevices onto me.

I put down the phone and thought of dad, of his strong arms that so easily carried and lifted me over places I was scared to step over. My thoughts went to the lovely poem, 'Footprints', in which the man in the poem looks back over the years and sees a pair of footprints which he knows is that of God and himself walking next to each other.

"And what about those footprints, which are alone?" asks the man of God, "Did you leave me then?"

"No," says God, "that is when I carried you,"

What a beautiful thought .God carrying us:

When we are sick. When we have no strength left in our bodies. When we have given up. When we cling to the edge of a precipice and are frightened by what we see when we look down.

There is a lovely story of a mother eagle that had built her nest on a ledge of rock jutting precariously over a steep and dangerous precipice.

Soaring through the air one day, returning to her nest, she was startled by what she saw. Clinging desperately to the jagged edge of a rock at the top of the canyon was her baby eagle, struggling with all its might to prevent a fall that was sure to crush its body more than a thousand feet below.

Unable to get to the ledge before her little one could fall, the mother eagle, with the speed of lighting, swooped low beneath the jutting rock, spread her strong wings to break the fall of her darling and with her precious cargo clinging to the feathers of her mighty wings glided safely to the canyon's floor.

Carried by its mother's wings, the little one lived.

So also is our heavenly father, waiting to lift us up, and break our fall.

I am sure there are many of us, in situations where we are afraid to cross something fearful and difficult.

Wait for God to take you across.

I am sure there many who are clinging to some jagged rock, knowing that your strength is waning. Let Go and let God pick you up and put you down safely on solid ground.

My father is no more there to lift me across the rough patches of hills and rocks and over the bridges at stations, but I know that the Father he has gone up to be with has muscles that will continue to effortlessly do the same work.

He is there for you too my friend..!
